Jewelry care guide

Well-kept jewelry will last for years, even centuries. These recommendations are designed to help your Dikua pieces preserve their original finish and accompany you for a long time.

General care · All jewelry

Basic recommendations for all pieces

Regardless of the material, we recommend following these guidelines to extend the life of your handcrafted jewelry:

Do not wear your jewelry while handling chemical substances such as bleach, detergent, soap, or shampoo.

Remove your pieces before swimming in a pool or taking a shower.

Never spray perfume directly onto your pieces — it may stain them or alter their finish.

Store each piece separately to avoid scratches.

01 · Silver jewelry care

Silver · Matte & oxidized finish

All my silver work is finished brushed matte or oxidized. To preserve the matte finish and prevent tarnish, keep your pieces away from air: in a hermetic box, in their original wrap, or in a cellophane bag.

Oxidized pieces: Never clean them — they will lose their original look. This finish is part of the design and should not be restored with home remedies.

How to clean white silver

If your piece is completely silver-white (not blued or mixed with other materials) and needs to be cleaned from tarnish, you can use one of these methods:

Baking soda boil: Put water in an aluminum pot over low heat, add a small spoonful of baking soda, and let it boil. Place the piece inside for about 3 minutes. Always watch the pot to prevent accidents.

Baking soda & lime paste: If tarnish persists, make a paste with baking soda and a few drops of lime juice and rub gently. Remove residue with a soft cloth.

New kitchen scrubbing fiber: To recover a matte finish, gently rub with a new green scrubbing pad (never used for cooking). On pieces mixed with other materials, cover non-metal parts with tape before cleaning. Keep in mind that silver is a soft metal and light scratches are a natural part of everyday wear.

Important: We do not recommend commercial silver cleaning liquids — they may cause skin irritation, sensitivity, or contact allergy, and can permanently damage pieces that include textiles, ceramics, wood, resin, stone, or a dark patina finish.

02 · Patinated silver jewelry care

Blacked sterling · Dark patina

Jewelry care for patinated pieces is quite different from a brushed finish. The black patina is a treatment that will naturally fade over time. Its duration depends on the intensity of use, care, and even the wearer's pH. When needed, I can reapply the treatment (postage and maintenance costs may apply).

Never clean blackened pieces — they will lose their original appearance.

Keep them dry and avoid contact with soaps, shampoos, and detergents while wearing them.

Do not store blacked pieces in metal containers or mixed with other metals — they can be permanently stained.

Prevent contact with ferrous metals, aluminum, and galvanized metals.

Do not include chalk when storing — it will stain blacked silver.

To recover some lost luster while keeping the black tone, gently rub the piece with a dry cloth.

Allergies: Some people may present an allergic reaction to certain patinas or bluing. If you notice any irritation, stop wearing the piece and consult a doctor.

03 · Gold-plated jewelry care

Gold & gold vermeil

I do not sell gold pieces abroad due to mail post restrictions. All gold-toned pieces in my store are listed as gold vermeil: sterling silver or brass gold-plated. The difference between vermeil and gold-plated is the thickness of the gold layer — in vermeil, at least 10k gold is used.

Karat reference

24k = 100% pure gold · 18k = 75% · 14k = 58% · 9k = 37%

How to care for your gold-plated pieces

Avoid scratches and contact with chemicals, soaps, shampoo, bleach, and cosmetics.

To clean, use a soft flannel cloth.

Store in the original bag, separately and sealed.

Gold plating is a treatment that will wear over time. With proper care, it can last one to two years. When needed, I can reapply it (maintenance and shipping costs may apply).

Important: We do not recommend commercial cleaning liquids — they may damage the gold plating and cause skin irritation or contact allergy. Pieces that include textiles, ceramics, wood, or stone may be permanently damaged.

04 · Resin jewelry care

Eco-resin jewelry

Even though resin is a durable material, it is not unbreakable. Follow these tips to keep your pieces in great condition:

Avoid strong impacts — the piece may crack or break.

Do not leave it exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods — it may be permanently damaged.

Do not use chemicals, soaps, shampoo, or spray perfume directly on the piece.

To clean, use a soft flannel or old cotton cloth. On matte pieces, you may occasionally apply a few drops of baby oil with a flannel — it will make them much prettier without altering the matte finish. Be careful, as this may leave the piece slightly greasy and could stain clothing.

Store separately to avoid scratches.

Extremely important: Resin is flammable. Keep it away from fire and high temperatures at all times.

05 · Color patina jewelry care

Color patina

Patina is a finish that gives color to metal parts. It is durable but can be lost with use. To keep it in good condition:

Avoid scratches and strong impacts on the treated surfaces.

Avoid contact with chemicals of any kind — they may alter or remove the finish entirely.

With love,

Fernanda
